Data is the key components of a GIS. Generally there are two types of GIS data: spatial data and attribute data.

Spatial Data- Features that have a known location on Earth. Spatial data provides a combination of coordinate and projection information of spatial features.

Attribute Data- Information related to spatial feature describes them.
