Advantages and Disadvantages of Raster and Vector data model

Raster and vector data both are the spatial data type. Both data structure play important role GIS data model. In this study we discuss some advantages and disadvantages of raster data and vector data model.

Advantages of Raster-

1. It is simple data structure.

2. The best way to represent continuous features data.

3. Overlay operations easy to perform.

4.  Due to same cell size it is easy for simulation.

Disadvantages of Raster-

1. Difficult to perform coordinate transformation process.

2. Difficult in topological representation.

3. The cell-size determines the feature resolution.

Advantages of Vector-

1. Projection transformation can be done smoothly.

2. Easily edit the data and Graphic output is usually aesthetically pleasing.

3. Connects easily between topologies and networks.

4. High spatial resolution.

Disadvantages of Vectors-

1. Difficult to represent continuous data.

2. Time consuming and expensive.

3. Complex data structure.

Comparison between raster data structure and vector data structure

Characteristics

Raster data

Vector data

Introduction

One type of spatial data that made up of a square grid of pixel.

Type of spatial data that comprised of vertices and path.

Nature of data

Continuous data

Discrete data

Representation

Data’s are represents in cells or pixel.

Represents data using line, point, polygon symbol.

Data structure

It is a simple and low cost data structure

It is complex and expensive data structure.

Locations identifications

The raster data model uses a series of cells or pixel to represent locations on the earth.

The vector data model uses point and line segments to identify locations on the earth.

Overlay operations

In raster data overlay operations are easily implemented.

In vector data overlay operations are difficult to implement.

Example

Temperature, rainfall, elevation are some example of raster data.

Administrative boundaries and Linear features like road, river are some examples of vector data.
